On 3/31/10, Norton Police received a complaint of erratic operation of a vehicle on Taunton Avenue. The caller reported to dispatch that the vehicle, a Jeep Cherokee, nearly struck his vehicle and then drove onto several front lawns on Taunton Avenue. Police were immediately dispatched to the area.
Police observed the vehicle traveling east on Barrows Street. The vehicle was traveling east in the westbound lane, facing oncoming traffic, and nearly struck the police vehicle operated by Ptlm. Michael Mckenney. Ptlm. Mckenney observed the vehicle to have two flat tires, with the rims in contact with the road. Ptlm. Mckenney stopped the vehicle a short distance after on Barrows Street.
The operator, EUGENE COURTNEY, age 45, of 5 Cottage Street, Norton, was placed under arrest and transported to the Norton police station. Courtney was charged with: 4th Offense OUI, Illegally Attaching Plates to a Motor Vehicle, Operating in Violation of License Restriction (Interlock Device), Operating a Motor Vehicle Negligently so as to Endanger, and Failure to Stay Within Marked Lanes.
Courtney was held without bail at the Norton police station and arraigned Wednesday morning at the Attleboro District Court. A dangerousness hearing will be held on Monday, 4/5/10, at the Attleboro District Court.
